A Hamilton police officer has been demoted for a year for his "appalling" behavior towards an Indigenous man. This happened during the arrest of the man in 2021.

In the video released of this incident, it is seen that this police officer kicks the man in the head and knocks him to the ground. The officer also puts pressure on the man's chest with his knee, choking him.

The judge called this behavior "unacceptable" and "unnecessary" and said that the police officer "abused his power."

This demotion is the first time in Hamilton police history that such conduct has been issued.
