Cars stolen in Canada and destined for the Middle East were seized in Italy
Italian authorities have recovered 251 stolen cars in Canada destined for Middle Eastern markets at a busy port, according to Italian police.
The port of Gioia Tauro is a key maritime facility in southern Italy and one of the busiest shipping hubs in Europe as it lies between the Strait of Gibraltar and the Suez Canal.
The Italian police announced that these cars were stolen from Canada in recent months and are of "expensive" or "reputable" brands.
With the help of the RCMP and Interpol, the stolen vehicles were found inside containers that had arrived on 18 different cargo ships - with "almost complete" fake identification information.
Italian officials announced "teamwork" with the RCMP, saying it was a "synergy" that would allow complex business investigations to quickly confirm irregularities in entry declarations and license plates.
