Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland announced that prescription drug subsidies will not jeopardize Canada's fiscal position. The NDP confirmed on Friday that it has reached an agreement with the Liberals on the subsidy, which would give any Canadian with a health card access to free diabetes and birth control.

Speaking to reporters, Freeland said his government is committed to investing in Canadians while being fiscally responsible. Health Minister Mark Holland has repeatedly increased the cost of the prescription drug subsidy program. The only issue left on the table is what type of diabetes equipment should be covered, a source close to the negotiations said.

The Liberals have made it clear that about $800 million is needed for the initial plan, the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
