IKEA recalls 10K portable chargers due to burn, shock hazard
Swedish home appliance giant IKEA has issued a recall for a popular charger sold in Canada due to the risk of fire and electric shock. According to Health Canada, the recall includes the IKEA Åskstorm 40W USB charger in dark gray, which has the no. The model is ICPSW5-40-1. At least 10,258 units of this product were sold in Canada between April 2020 and December 2023.
The Ministry of Health warned that the wear and tear of the electric cable may bring the risk of burns and shocks to people.
Globally, 17 reports have been received by IKEA in which the power cable has been damaged due to wear and tear from use. Some of those reports have included burns and electric shocks, but the company said it had not received any reports of injuries or incidents in Canada as of January 3, 2024.
In its recall, the Ministry of Health warned consumers to immediately stop using the charger and return it to IKEA for a refund. There is no need to provide proof of purchase for this.
It is illegal to sell, distribute or offer the recalled products in Canada under the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act.
