The Saskatchewan government says the natural gas utility will not charge residential customers a carbon tax starting today.
The move comes after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau exempted those who use home heating oil from paying the tax, which mostly benefits Atlantic Canadians.
Saskatchewan requested an exemption to cover other forms of heating, but Ottawa rejected the request. In response, the province announced that it will stop collecting fees from the beginning of 2024.
  SaskEnergy Minister Dustin Duncan said the deadline to pay taxes to the federal government is the last day of February.
If SaskEnergy doesn't pay those dollars, it's breaking federal law and executives could face fines or jail time.
Saskatchewan passed laws aimed at protecting enforcers from legal consequences, placing a heavy burden on the province.
SaskEnergy has asked the federal government to remove it as a registered natural gas distributor, Duncan said in December.
He said the company wants Ottawa to list the province as a distributor instead.
