Facebook's $51 million settlement in Canada
In the latest legal and technology news, Facebook users in Canada may soon see $51 million in damages. This is a payment for a court settlement resulting from a class action lawsuit based on allegations of privacy violations. The lawsuit was filed in 2012 by a plaintiff who claimed his name and account information were used in an ad without permission.
The agreement reached is considered a "settlement of disputed claims" and does not in any way mean an admission of liability by Facebook. An estimated 4.3 million people in the provinces of British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Newfoundland and Labrador who had Facebook accounts between January 2011 and May 2014 are eligible for damages. The deadline for submitting claims has been set until August 20, 2024.
